I'm in a third floor apartment, which makes for some interesting adventures lugging my stuff up the stairs, but it has a balcony overlooking the courtyard where I can sit and spy on the neighbors. The photos to the right are of some of my new new neighbors taken from the balcony.
They seem to be mostly robins and starlings. There are a couple sparrows and a pair of mourning doves who drop by from time to time. The apartments are just over the flood wall from the river, so I also see ducks and geese occasionally passing overhead. I've only been there a week, so there are probably a few neighbors I haven't met yet.
The robins have a nest in one of the trees, but it's around the backside of the tree where I can't see it. The robins and the starlings are constantly bickering. They seem to enjoy it. One or the other will be bopping along minding its own business when one of the other ones lands close by and pretends to be minding its own business until the first bird chases it off. They chase each other around the courtyard then go up into the trees squawking back and forth at each other. I guess that's what passes for sport in bird circles.
Just over the flood wall is James Taylor Park, right at the junction of the Licking and Ohio Rivers. That's where I go to get most of my bird photos and was the main reason I was interested in these apartments.
I haven't had much time to visit the park while I've been settling in, but I did mozy over and snap a few pictures the other day. It was nice to see families with kids enjoying the park, like the family of Canada Geese below.
