James Taylor Park

Van accessible parking? March 7, 2004

I usually go to Mom's when I get a whole weekend off, but she wasn't feeling good and cancelled. So I decided to do something productive and headed for the park.

The high water allowed the ducks to swim between the picnic tables. The Toulouse geese were gone. I guess they were just visiting. We've had quite a bit of rain the past few days and the river was up a bit. It was kind of interesting watching the ducks swimming between the picnic tables.

When I tell people about James Taylor Park, their first response is usually surprise that the people of Newport would be such big music fans as to name a park after James Taylor. I always find that curious because I fail to see the connection between General James Taylor and popular music.

James Taylor ParkActually, that was my response too the first time I heard the name of it. Fortunately, there are signs posted along the Flood Wall explaining who James Taylor was and a little bit about Newport history. Here's the story in a nutshell...

Feeding FrenzyThe park had its usual assortment of Canada Geese, Mallards, and Ring-Billed Gulls, along with the ubiquitous pigeons, grackles, and starlings. The gulls seem to have thinned out a bit. I wonder if they're heading back to their usual haunts on the Great Lakes?

Somebody threw out some popcorn, which sparked a feeding frenzy. Even the geese and mallards joined in.

It was a perfect day for hanging out at the park. Mostly sunny with a few very picturesque clouds thrown in. As the afternoon progressed, the clouds became even more picturesque as some very colorful blur-gray clouds moved in. Alas, they brought the rain with them, so I decided to call it a day.
